Self-Guided Motorcycle Tour South Africa: How It Works

A self-guided motorcycle tour in South Africa gives you the freedom to ride independently, with the main logistics arranged before you arrive. Outbound Moto provides a prepared motorcycle, a planned seven-day route, booked accommodation, an airport transfer and 24/7 backup. You choose your pace and your stops, without a guide leading the group.

Our tours start and end in St Francis Bay in the Eastern Cape. There are two routes: Cape2Karoo takes in the Baviaanskloof, the Karoo interior and the Garden Route, while Frontier & Mist heads into the Eastern Cape Highlands.

Here's how the arrangement works, what we handle, and what remains your responsibility as the rider.

The Self-Guided Model

Self-guided touring combines independent riding with organised logistics. You follow a supplied route and stay at accommodation booked for your itinerary, with backup available throughout the tour.

There's no lead motorcycle setting the pace. Within the day's route, you decide when to stop for photographs, take a break, or spend a little longer somewhere that catches your attention. You still need to allow enough time to reach your overnight stop, and to adjust your plans sensibly for weather, road conditions and fatigue.

Independence Without Isolation

We arrange the motorcycle, route and accommodation, so you spend less time organising the trip and more time riding. Backup is available 24/7 if a problem arises. Cell coverage or Wi-Fi is available on most of both routes, but coverage is difficult in some sections, so talk to us about communication before you set off.

Who This Format Suits

These tours are for experienced riders who are comfortable handling an adventure motorcycle on gravel. You should be able to manage a loaded bike, follow a supplied route, and make sensible decisions as conditions change.

You don't need to ride quickly. Confidence, sound judgement and an honest understanding of your limits matter more than speed.

Riders must be at least 25 and have held a full motorcycle licence for at least two years. When you enquire, tell us about your riding experience and the kind of terrain you normally ride. That helps us discuss whether the tour, and your preferred route, are a good fit.

Route Planning and Navigation

Both routes are planned as seven-day journeys from St Francis Bay, each around 70% gravel. Daily riding is roughly four to six hours, and the routes are planned to finish in daylight.

Each day has a clear destination, while leaving room to enjoy the journey. Roads and passes can be affected by weather, closures and maintenance, so the route may need adjusting before or during a tour.

Following Your Pre-Loaded Garmin Route

Each motorcycle comes with a Garmin zūmo XT2 GPS with the tour route loaded. Every morning you select the relevant day and follow it to your next overnight stop. You don't need to load files or build your own routes.

The route is loaded as a route only, without marked fuel or food stops, so check the day's route before you set off and plan your stops around it. Get to know the unit before departure, and ask us about anything you're unsure of. Whenever you need to study the route, stop somewhere safe to do it.

Distance Versus Difficulty

Distance alone doesn't tell you how demanding a day will be. A short stretch of rough gravel or a mountain pass can take longer than a much greater distance on tar. Use the day's route as a planning guide, and allow for breaks and changing conditions.

The Motorcycle and Equipment

Tours run on the KTM 790 Adventure. Each bike is serviced by the KTM dealer according to KTM's factory service schedule, and we run our own checks before every tour. Each bike comes with:

Minor roadside fixes, such as plugging a puncture or tightening a loose bolt, are the rider's job. Get to know the bike and its kit before you set off, and tell us about any concerns before departure or any problems that develop along the way. For more on the bike and its setup, see KTM 790 Adventure Rental South Africa.

Accommodation

Accommodation along the route is arranged as part of the tour, with breakfast included at every overnight stop. Lunches, dinners, drinks and fuel are for your own account. Every pre-booked stop has secure off-street parking.

Each stop gives the day a destination, so you're not searching for somewhere to stay after a long ride. Mention any dietary needs or accommodation preferences when you enquire, so they can be discussed before arrangements are finalised.

If the Bike Breaks Down

You can reach us 24/7. Here's what happens when you call:

  1. We ask questions to diagnose the problem and try to talk you through a fix over the phone.
  2. If that doesn't work, we drive out with the spare motorcycle on a trailer, plus tools and spare parts.
  3. When we reach you, we either repair your bike on the spot or swap it for the spare.

We respond immediately. How long it takes us to reach you depends on how far you are from base.

Satellite communication isn't included in the package. If continuous contact matters to you, bring or arrange your own device.

Arriving in St Francis Bay

Your airport transfer is included in the tour. The nights before collection and after return aren't included in the tour price. They're for your own account, but we're happy to help you arrange accommodation if you'd prefer. Arriving the day before gives you a chance to rest after travelling before your first day's riding.

Bring riding gear suited to the season and the conditions you may meet. Our packing guide for a self-guided motorcycle tour in South Africa is a good starting point.

Self-Guided or Guided?

The right format depends on how you like to travel, and how comfortable you are riding independently.

Self-guided touring suits riders who enjoy setting their own pace and taking responsibility for navigation and decisions on the road. Guided touring may suit those who prefer a leader with them throughout. Our comparison of self-guided and guided motorcycle touring looks at the differences in more detail.

These tours aren't beginner riding courses. If you're unsure about your experience on gravel, remote roads or a loaded adventure motorcycle, talk to us before booking.

Booking Your Tour

Start by choosing a route. Our Cape2Karoo vs Frontier & Mist comparison sets the two side by side. Then send us your preferred dates, number of riders and a short description of your riding experience, using the contact form on outboundmoto.co.za or by email to info@outboundmoto.co.za.
