KTM 790 Adventure Rental South Africa: Self-Guided Tours
Renting a KTM 790 Adventure in South Africa is usually framed as a comparison of daily rates. With Outbound Moto, the bike comes as part of a self-guided tour out of St Francis Bay in the Eastern Cape: a prepared motorcycle, a planned route loaded on the GPS, pre-booked accommodation, and backup if something goes wrong. You ride at your own pace, and the logistics are handled.
This page covers what comes with the bike, how it's prepared, and what happens if it breaks down.
What Comes With the Motorcycle
- KTM 790 Adventure, serviced to KTM's factory schedule
- Garmin zūmo XT2 GPS with the full route loaded
- Rack-less soft pannier system, 60 litres in total (3 × 20 L)
- Tubeless tyres, with a plug kit and a tyre pressure gauge and pump
- A small tool kit for adjustments, plus duct tape, cable ties and blue thread-locker
The motorcycle is part of a seven-day tour package that also includes all accommodation along the route and your airport transfer. Fuel and meals are for your own account.
How the Bikes Are Prepared
Every bike is serviced by the KTM dealer according to KTM's factory service schedule. On top of that, we run our own checks on each bike before it goes out, so it's ready for the journey ahead of it.
Tyres, Punctures and Roadside Fixes
The bikes run tubeless tyres, so a puncture can be plugged at the roadside without removing the wheel. Each bike carries a plug kit and a pressure gauge and pump, so you can adjust pressures for load and surface as you go.
Minor roadside fixes are the rider's job: plugging a puncture, tightening a loose bolt, securing something with a cable tie. That's what the tool kit is there for. Bigger problems are where our backup comes in.
Luggage
Luggage is a rack-less soft pannier system with 60 litres of space, split into three 20-litre compartments. That's your packing budget for the week, so pack to it. Our packing guide for a self-guided motorcycle tour in South Africa covers what to bring.
Navigation
The Garmin zūmo XT2 comes with the full route loaded. Each morning you select the day's route and follow it. There's no waypoint programming or map downloading to do. The route is loaded as a route only, without marked fuel or food stops, so check the day's route before you set off and plan your stops around it.
Daily riding is roughly four to six hours, and the routes are planned to finish in daylight. Every pre-booked accommodation has secure off-street parking.
If the Bike Breaks Down
You can reach us 24/7. Here's what happens when you call:
- We ask questions to diagnose the problem and try to talk you through a fix over the phone.
- If that doesn't work, we drive out with the spare motorcycle on a trailer, plus tools and spare parts.
- When we reach you, we either repair your bike on the spot or swap it for the spare.
We respond immediately. How long it takes us to reach you depends on how far you are from base.
Staying in Touch
Cell coverage or Wi-Fi is available on most of both routes, but coverage is difficult in some sections. Satellite communication isn't included in the package. If continuous contact matters to you, bring or arrange your own device.
If you're riding alone, we can keep an eye on your progress if you'd like. We know your daily itinerary and your overnight stop, and a WhatsApp message from you each evening lets us know all is in order.
Choosing Your Route
There are two seven-day routes, each around 70% gravel. They differ in distance, altitude and technical demand.
Cape2Karoo (about 1,306 km) takes in the Baviaanskloof and the Karoo interior through Willowmore, Prince Albert and Calitzdorp, then returns through the Garden Route and Tsitsikamma. The Garden Route stretch is mostly tar with some gravel.
Frontier & Mist (about 1,811 km) is the high-country route through the Eastern Cape Highlands, including Lady Grey, Rhodes and Hogsback. It suits riders who actively enjoy technical riding at altitude.
For a side-by-side look, see Cape2Karoo vs Frontier & Mist. Neither route is for beginners. Both call for an honest read of your own gravel riding before you book.
Before and After the Tour
The nights before collection and after return aren't included in the tour price. They're for your own account, but we're happy to help you arrange accommodation if you'd prefer. Arriving the day before gives you a chance to rest after travelling before the handover and your first day's riding.
Rider Requirements
Riders must be at least 25 and have held a full motorcycle licence for at least two years.
