Cape2Karoo Vs Frontier and Mist: Which Route Fits You?
Choosing between Cape2Karoo and Frontier & Mist means being honest about your current riding form and what you actually want from seven days in the saddle. Both are self-guided adventure motorcycle tours. Both give you a prepared KTM 790 Adventure and booked accommodation. But they ask different things of the rider. One takes you through deep kloofs and across the open Karoo before an easier ride home along the coast. The other climbs into the Eastern Cape Highlands and over some of the most technical passes in the country.
We run two distinct routes because riders want different things from a week of gravel. Your choice comes down to this: do you want the Baviaanskloof, the wide-open Karoo and a shorter week, or a longer, higher week where the passes ask more of you? Below, we break down the terrain, the riding demands and the landscape of each so you can decide which Outbound Moto route fits your next trip.
Route Profiles at a Glance
Cape2Karoo covers roughly 1,306 km, running from St Francis Bay through the Baviaanskloof, the Karoo interior around Willowmore and Prince Albert, and Calitzdorp, before coming home along the Garden Route and Tsitsikamma. It's built for variety rather than altitude: in a single week you ride from the coast into a remote, rocky kloof, out across the Karoo and back to the sea.
Frontier & Mist is the longer of the two at roughly 1,811 km, covering the Eastern Cape Highlands via Lady Grey, Rhodes, Elliot and Hogsback. It climbs to 2,162 metres at Lundean's Nek, the highest point of the week, and takes in five of the passes from the Ben10 Eco Challenge, including Naude's Nek and Bastervoetpad. You cover more ground than on Cape2Karoo, at higher altitude, with more technical riding.
Neither is better. They serve different appetites.
Terrain and Surface Character
Both routes are roughly 70% gravel, so the difference between them isn't how much dirt you ride. It's distance, altitude and technical demand.
Cape2Karoo
The Baviaanskloof is the wildest part of the week: remote and rocky, with river crossings along the way. It's currently rideable, with some damaged sections. If it's completely closed on your riding day, there's an alternate route that passes north around the kloof, and we'll handle that with you case by case. At river crossings, stop and assess before you commit. Walk it if you're unsure of the depth or the bottom, and if you're in any doubt, turn back.
Beyond the kloof, the Karoo opens up into long gravel roads with towns far apart, so fill up whenever you get the chance. The closing stretch along the Garden Route and Tsitsikamma is mostly tar with some gravel, which makes for an easier ride home after the big days inland.
Frontier & Mist
Frontier & Mist carries a similar share of gravel, but much of the week is spent in mountain country. Days 4 and 5 are the heart of the route, crossing five Ben10 passes: Lundean's Nek, Carlisleshoekspruit and Volunteershoek on day 4, then Naude's Nek and Bastervoetpad on day 5. Bastervoetpad is the most technical of the ten Ben10 passes.
Mountain weather in the highlands can change quickly, and wet weather makes any mountain track harder going. Riders who enjoy reading terrain and working the bike through difficult sections will be in their element here.
Riding Difficulty and Daily Physical Load
Neither route is an introduction to adventure motorcycling. Both assume you're confident on loose surfaces and can manage a fully loaded adventure motorcycle on your own for a full riding day. Expect roughly four to six hours in the saddle each day, with every day planned to finish in daylight.
Assessing Rider Skill Requirements
Cape2Karoo suits riders who are comfortable on gravel and want a varied week without the high passes. It's the route we'd suggest for a first trip with us, as a question of fit rather than a ranking. You'll still want solid braking technique for descents and the patience to take river crossings carefully.
Frontier & Mist calls for real low-speed technical competence. Be comfortable standing on the pegs for long stretches, controlling the clutch on steep, rocky sections and starting on loose inclines. Day 3, up to Lady Grey, is the longest day in the seat because the going is slowest. Day 7 covers the most distance, but it's mostly tar, so it rides faster.
Fatigue and Recovery
Long gravel days tire you in different ways. Open, flowing roads are mostly about endurance. Technical mountain riding is mentally demanding as well, because the decisions keep coming. Whichever route you choose, take regular breaks, drink plenty of water and get a proper night's sleep, especially before the bigger days.
Landscape Character and Scenic Rewards
The Kloof, the Karoo and the Coast
Cape2Karoo delivers big contrasts. The Baviaanskloof is a deep, rugged valley of cliffs and fynbos. Leaving it, you move into the open Karoo, where the sky dominates and towns are few and far between. The ride home along the Garden Route and Tsitsikamma brings you back to green country and the coast, giving the week a natural shape from start to finish. Our Baviaanskloof guide covers the kloof in more detail.
Highland Peaks and Mountain Passes
Frontier & Mist puts you inside dramatic mountain country rather than looking at it from a distance. Around Lady Grey and Rhodes the peaks rise sharply, and morning mist on the ridgelines can give way to wide views as the day clears. Hogsback, near the end of the week, brings indigenous forest on the edge of the escarpment.
Logistics and Self-Guided Navigation
The setup is the same whichever route you pick. Every tour includes a KTM 790 Adventure with a Garmin zūmo XT2 GPS pre-loaded with the route. You follow each day's track at your own pace, stopping whenever the light or the terrain invites it.
If your bike gives trouble, phone us. We'll first ask questions to work out what's wrong and, where possible, talk you through a fix by phone. If that doesn't work, we drive out to you with tools, spare parts and a spare motorcycle on the trailer. We either fix your bike on the spot or swap it for the spare and take yours back to base. How long it takes to reach you depends on how far you are from St Francis Bay. Each bike carries a small tool kit with duct tape, cable ties and thread-locker, and riders are expected to handle minor roadside fixes themselves. We don't provide satellite communication equipment. Cell coverage or Wi-Fi is available on most of both routes, but some sections are patchy, so plan accordingly.
Every accommodation on both routes is pre-booked and has secure off-street parking for the bikes. We recommend arriving in St Francis Bay the day before your first riding day. That night isn't included in the tour price, but we're happy to help you arrange it. Our guide to how self-guided touring works explains what independence means in practice, and what support stays available regardless.
Choosing Your Eastern Cape Motorcycle Route
Matching Route to Riding Style
Choose Cape2Karoo if you want the Baviaanskloof, the wide-open Karoo and a relaxed ride home along the coast, over a shorter week. It also suits pairs with mixed skill levels.
Pick the Frontier & Mist itinerary if you enjoy working through technical sections and want a longer, higher week in the saddle, and you're comfortable with mountain weather. If you're still unsure, look at the full Cape2Karoo route details alongside it; comparing the daily breakdowns side by side often settles it.
Seasonal Considerations
Both routes run all year round. October to April is the drier window and our premium riding season, but the other months can make a great trip too. Altitude is what sets the two routes apart here.
On Cape2Karoo, the Karoo stretches can get hot in midsummer, so early starts make the most of the cooler hours. Winter brings crisp, clear days, with colder mornings to dress for.
Frontier & Mist rides higher, so its weather is more changeable. Highland winters can bring frost and occasional snow on the high passes, and summer afternoons can bring thunderstorms, so keep your waterproof gear ready in any month. If you're flexible on dates, April is a lovely month in the highlands before the colder weather sets in.
Preparing for Independent Adventure Touring
The motorcycle is serviced by the KTM dealer on the factory schedule and checked by us before every tour, but your own kit sets the comfort and safety margin once you're out there. See our guide on what to pack for a self-guided motorcycle tour in South Africa for equipment suited to Eastern Cape conditions.
Rider competence is the main safety factor, whatever support is available. If you're unsure whether your current skill level matches either route, build confidence on gravel at home before you book. For a broader picture, see our overview of Eastern Cape adventure routes.
When you're ready, request availability with your preferred route, dates and group size, and we'll come back to you.
