Adventure Motorcycle Tour Eastern Cape Cost: 7-Day Guide

Budgeting for a self-guided adventure motorcycle tour in the Eastern Cape is simpler than you might expect, because the big costs are settled before you arrive. What's left is what you control day to day: fuel, food, and the insurance you bring with you. Here's what's included, what isn't, and how to plan for the rest.

What the Tour Price Includes

Every Outbound Moto tour is sold as one package price per rider, for seven days of self-guided riding. There's no guide and no following support vehicle, so you aren't paying for a convoy you don't need. The money goes into the motorcycle, the route and the places you sleep.

The package covers:

Published rates are the same on both routes: €3,450 for a solo rider, €3,250 per rider for two, €3,100 for three and €2,950 for four. Every tour runs privately, from a single rider upwards, and larger groups are quoted on request. Tours run all year round. October to April is the drier window and our premium riding season, but the rates don't change with it.

The Motorcycle

We use KTM 790 Adventure motorcycles. Each bike is serviced by the KTM dealer on the factory service schedule, and between tours we run our own checks so every motorcycle goes out ready for the journey ahead. Each one carries a rack-less soft pannier system, 60 litres across three 20-litre compartments, so you pack once and carry your own kit between stops. If you want the detail on the bike itself, our KTM 790 Adventure rental guide covers it.

Route, GPS and Accommodation

Every overnight stop is booked before you arrive, and you follow a set day-by-day itinerary on the pre-loaded GPS, so you're never downloading third-party files or hunting for a bed after six hours in the saddle. If weather or road works close a section, the route is substituted rather than abandoned.

What You Budget for Yourself

Fuel

Fuel is for your own account. How much you use depends on your throttle hand, the terrain and the wind, so plan by range rather than by an average figure. One practical point: the motorcycle has no conventional fuel-level gauge. Track your range on the trip meter and fill up at every sensible opportunity, especially on the quieter inland days, where stations are far apart and may be closed. Running out of fuel counts as a recovery you caused, so it's the one breakdown you really don't want.

Meals

Meals are also for your own account, and prices swing between the busier coastal and Garden Route towns and the small inland ones. Coastal days make it easy to spend on coffee stops and pub lunches. Inland and in the Highlands, options thin out between towns, so carry water and snacks and don't count on a roadside stop.

Nights Before or After the Tour

The accommodation included in your tour covers the nights of the tour itself. Any night before collecting the motorcycle, or after handing it back, is for your own account. We recommend arriving the day before to settle in before handover, and if you'd prefer us to handle it, we're happy to help arrange your accommodation.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is a condition of booking, and it's a real line in your budget. Your policy must cover medical treatment, emergency evacuation and repatriation, and riding a motorcycle above 750 cc as the rider on unsealed (gravel) roads. Check that last point carefully, because many standard policies exclude it.

Deposits and Payments

A 30% booking deposit is payable when you book, and the balance falls due 60 days before you collect the motorcycle. Bookings made within 60 days of collection are payable in full. Your booking is confirmed when we issue your written Booking Confirmation.

Separately, a refundable R25,000 security deposit is charged to your card by secure payment link, due 48 hours before handover. Credit and debit cards are both accepted, provided the card is in your own name. If no damage is recorded, the deposit is refunded in full within three working days of return, less any refuelling charge. It's charged and refunded in rand, so exchange differences and bank fees are for your account, and your card limit needs to allow for it.

Your liability for damage to the motorcycle is capped, and the full terms are set out in the rental agreement you receive with your booking.

Self-Guided vs Guided: Where the Money Goes

Guided tours spread a guide's salary and a support vehicle across a small group, and that shows in the price. The self-guided format removes that overhead without removing the safety net, because you still have 24/7 support behind you. The value depends on an honest read of your own riding and navigation. Our comparison of self-guided and guided motorcycle touring goes deeper on which suits which rider.

Route-Specific Budgeting: Cape2Karoo vs Frontier & Mist

The package price is the same on both routes, so the differences show up in your daily spending.

Cape2Karoo

Cape2Karoo covers about 1,306 km, roughly 70% of it gravel, from St Francis Bay through the Baviaanskloof, the Karoo interior and the Garden Route. It mixes busy tourist stretches with genuinely remote passes. Coastal days offer plenty of places to eat and refuel, which invites spontaneous spending. Inland days reward planning, especially for fuel through the Baviaanskloof and the Karoo.

Frontier & Mist

Frontier & Mist is the high-country route: about 1,811 km, also around 70% gravel, through the Eastern Cape Highlands, including Lady Grey and Rhodes, and over some of the most technical passes in the country. It suits riders who actively enjoy technical riding and altitude. Towns are further apart and fewer restaurants open outside the busier months, so daily spending is predictable and modest, but you'll want to carry food and water and top up fuel whenever you can.

You'll find both routes side by side on our tours page.

What 24/7 Support Covers

If the motorcycle breaks down, call us and we respond immediately. We'll first ask questions to work out what's wrong and, where possible, talk you through a fix by phone. If that doesn't work, we drive out with the spare motorcycle on a trailer, plus tools and parts, and either repair your bike on the spot or swap it for the spare. How long it takes to reach you depends on how far you are from our base. Where a breakdown is a mechanical failure through no fault of yours, recovery is at our cost. Where recovery is needed because of something the rider did, such as a fall, a collision or running out of fuel, it's charged per kilometre from the handover point.

Satellite communication isn't included in the package. Cellular coverage is patchy in the remote sections, so if you want off-grid contact, bring or arrange your own satellite communicator.

Calculating Your Total

Start with the package price for your group size. Add fuel on a conservative estimate for your route, meals weighted for the coastal-versus-inland price gap, your travel insurance, and any nights you add either side of the tour. Then make sure your card can carry the refundable security deposit. That's the whole picture: no hidden line items and no seasonal surcharges.

Tell us your preferred route, dates and group size and we'll come back with a quote. Start with our tours for Cape2Karoo and Frontier & Mist.
