Eastern Cape Self-Guided Motorcycle Tour Checklist

Are You Ready to Ride the Eastern Cape Self-Guided? An Honest Checklist

There's a particular kind of freedom in riding a route on your own terms. You leave when you're ready, stop where the view demands it, and take the Baviaanskloof or the high passes of the Eastern Cape Highlands at exactly the pace that suits you. There's no lead rider to follow and no group to wait for. It's just you, the bike and some of the finest gravel riding in Southern Africa.

That freedom is the whole point of a self-guided tour, and it comes with a fair trade: the decisions on the day are yours. We plan the route, book the accommodation, prepare the motorcycle and stand by around the clock. You bring the riding skill and good judgement to enjoy it safely.

This checklist is here to help you decide honestly whether you're ready. Most experienced adventure riders will find they tick every box. If you're unsure about one or two, that's worth a conversation with us before you book.

The Quick Checklist

Before you book, you should be able to say yes to each of these:

The sections below explain what each of these looks like in practice.

Gravel Confidence on a Loaded Bike

Both of our routes are around 70% gravel, and that's where the magic is. Think of the Baviaanskloof's rocky kloof roads, Karoo farm tracks stretching to the horizon, and mountain passes that were built by hand more than a century ago.

To enjoy them, you'll want recent experience on loose surfaces with luggage on board. A fully fuelled and loaded adventure bike weighs well over 200 kilograms. Standing on the pegs, feeding in smooth throttle and braking with confidence on a gravel descent should feel natural to you. You shouldn't need to be thinking it through.

If you've spent the last few seasons riding gravel roads with some weight on the bike, you'll feel right at home. If most of your recent kilometres have been on tar, a gravel-skills day before your trip is a great investment. It will make your tour far more enjoyable.

Finding Your Way with GPS

Every motorcycle carries a Garmin zūmo XT2 with the full route pre-loaded. Each morning you select the day's track and ride. There are no maps to wrestle with and no route planning to do. We've already ridden it.

What the GPS can't do is read the road for you. Livestock, roadworks, a washed-out drift after rain: those are yours to judge in the moment. The riders who enjoy self-guided touring most are the ones who treat a missed turn as part of the adventure. They pull over, check the track, and carry on without fuss.

Setting Your Own Pace

Riding without a group is liberating, but it also means nobody else is calling the breaks. You decide when to stop for water, when to eat and when to rest. Gravel riding is more tiring than it looks, and fatigue creeps up quietly in the afternoon.

Our routes include long, rewarding days. Frontier & Mist's climb to Lady Grey, for example, is the slowest going of the week. Riders who pace themselves sensibly arrive at the evening's accommodation tired but grinning. Build in time for photos and a proper lunch stop, and you'll get far more out of every day.

Handling Small Roadside Fixes

Out on the route, small things happen. A mirror works loose, a bolt rattles free, or something needs securing after a tip-over. These are part of adventure riding, and we expect riders to handle them on the spot.

To make that easy, every bike carries a small tool kit for basic adjustments, plus duct tape, cable ties and blue thread-locker for the kind of running repairs that get you to the next town. If you're comfortable tightening a loose bolt, re-securing your luggage or making a quick fix at the side of a dirt road, you're well equipped for this tour.

For anything beyond a roadside fix, such as a proper breakdown or a fall that leaves the bike unrideable, call us straight away, day or night. We'll first ask a few questions to work out what's wrong and, where we can, talk you through a fix over the phone. If that doesn't get you going, we drive out from St Francis Bay with the spare motorcycle on a trailer, plus tools and parts. Depending on what we find, we either repair your bike on the spot or swap it for the spare. Some of our roads are remote, so how long we take to reach you depends on where you are. In the meantime, staying safe and visible is your job.

Staying in Touch

Cell reception is patchy on some of the more remote stretches, as you'd expect in the Baviaanskloof and the high country. Across most of the route, though, you'll find cell coverage or Wi-Fi, including at your overnight stops. We don't supply satellite communication devices, so if you like the extra peace of mind, you're welcome to bring your own.

What We Take Care Of

You ride. We handle the rest:

Every tour is private, from a single rider upwards, and runs on dates that suit you. We recommend arriving the day before your tour to settle in before collecting the motorcycle. That night, and any night after you hand the bike back, is for your own account, but we're happy to help you arrange it.

Choosing Your Route

We run two routes, and each has its own character.

Cape2Karoo takes you through the Baviaanskloof, across the Karoo interior and home along the Garden Route and Tsitsikamma. You'll ride historic mountain passes, meet ever-changing surfaces and see some of the most dramatic scenery in the Cape.

Frontier & Mist heads into the Eastern Cape Highlands, through Lady Grey, Rhodes and Hogsback. It reaches more than 2,000 metres on some of the country's most celebrated high passes. It's a route for riders who love altitude and technical riding, and the mountain weather adds to the sense of adventure.

Ticked Every Box?

Then the Eastern Cape is waiting for you. If you're still unsure about any point on the checklist, or you'd like help choosing between the two routes, get in touch. We're happy to talk it through honestly and help you pick the tour that fits your riding.
